Helpful tips to get the most enjoyment from your walks

Before setting out on any walk, make sure you are prepared so you are safe and enjoy the walk.

The guidelines below provide some essential steps to ensure you get the most from your walk, while keeping yourself and the group safe.

  1. For new members, speak to the walk coordinator to RSVP for the walk. The walk coordinator will give you information about the walk. This will include SAFETY information.

  2. Know your limits. Please discuss your fitness level and experience with the walk coordinator to ensure the walk is appropriate and safe for you.  Your participation in the walk might be declined, but don’t be offended. It is essential that the walk destination can be reached and the group returns in the scheduled timeframe.

  3. Apply sunscreen and insect repellent before the walk. Bring along a supply to re-apply during the walk.

  4. Wear appropriate clothing for the walk. This includes a beanie and a sunhat, adequate footwear, preferably walking boots, long sleeve shirt and long trousers (NO denim) if the terrain and weather warrant it. Wear gaiters to avoid cuts, scratches, injury and reduce the chance of snake bites. The walk coordinator can advise you of appropriate clothing for the walk.

  5. Have adequate hydration in the 24-hour lead-up to the walk. Don’t start a walk thirsty. Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service recommends at least 1 litre of water per person for every three hours of walking. Ask the walk coordinator about the recommended amount of water to bring. You can’t rely on obtaining refills, as opportunities may not exist. Consider taking electrolyte replacement drinks. Take regular drinks during the walk.

  6. Have an adequate breakfast on the morning of the walk. Bring along lunch, snacks and fast energy food.

  7. Ensure your vehicle has enough fuel in case you need to drive to the trailhead as carpooling may not be available. This will prevent a stressful situation in a remote location!

  8. If you have any issues develop during the walk, such as sore feet or fatigue, tell the walk coordinator.

New members always welcome. Come along for a walk and see what we’re all about!
